Description
The Navajo name is Tsé Bit ‘A’í, which means “rock with wings.” From a distance of over two miles and viewed from ground level the Shiprock formation does not seem very tall. However, this monadnock rises nearly 1,580 feet above the high-desert plain. Its peak elevation is 7,177 feet above sea level. That makes it taller that the Empire State Building relative to the surrounding plain.
